How to choose the best electric toothbrushes?
Technology: Every technology has its advantages and disadvantages. Besides, it also depends on individual wishes, experiences, and habits. But all three have one thing in common: They clean much more thoroughly than a manual toothbrush. Therefore, if you are unsure about choosing one of the three technologies, read this section carefully, which explains the differences and advantages of each technology.
Brush head: With technology, you also choose the type of brush head at the same time. Compared to the rotary toothbrush, sonic toothbrushes have a larger, longer brush head. The brush heads of the rotary toothbrush, on the other hand, are smaller but usually higher. If you prefer elongated large brush heads that resemble a manual toothbrush rather than a smaller round, then a sonic toothbrush is the right choice for you. Larger sonic brush cleaning heads also achieve a larger tooth surface with the same cleaning duration. The smaller, oscillating round brush head, on the other hand, reaches hard-to-reach areas in the mouth.
Costs: We recommend not only keeping an eye on the purchase price but also taking into account the subsequent costs for brush heads. Because these have to be changed regularly.
Cleaning programs: We recommend everyone to choose a toothbrush with at least two cleaning programs, a regular cleaning program and ideally a sensitive program. To get used to a manual toothbrush or, if you have problems with your gums in the meantime, such as inflammation, a gentler sensitive program is worth its weight in gold.
Battery type and battery performance: The built-in battery should also be considered when choosing an electric toothbrush. Some models go out after 30 minutes, and others last up to three hours. In general, we recommend an electric toothbrush with battery operation to avoid the high-cost factor – buying the battery. We recommend models with a lithium-ion battery (Li-Ion) over other models. Lithium-ion battery technology is more modern, the batteries last longer and are generally more durable. So you don’t have to buy a new toothbrush because of a battery that is no longer powerful. Unfortunately, for example, Oral-B still uses the vulnerable nickel-metal hydride batteries in almost all models, whereas Philips practically wholly relies on the modern lithium-ion batteries.
Timer: An integrated timer is also standard on the cheapest models and is a very sensible thing. The timer usually shows with short interruptions to cleaning when you should change the region to be cleaned in the mouth. Typically, the timer is set to a total cleaning time of two minutes, as this is the time recommended by dentists. Toothbrushes without timers should not be considered.
How to best use electric toothbrushes?
Brush your teeth for at least two minutes: You must also brush your teeth thoroughly with the electric brush in the morning and evening. The minimum is two minutes each, distributed as somewhat as possible over the four sections of the bit. Many electric toothbrushes signal the expiry of these periods, for example, by brief exposure. After brushing your teeth, you should also carefully clean your brush: Rinse the handle and brush attachment under running water after each use. Then let it air dry thoroughly. Change the brush head approximately every three months.
Brushing technique depends on the type of toothbrush: Let your electric toothbrush do the cleaning. Only guide the brush along with the teeth. Make sure that you control all tooth surfaces: front, back, and occlusal surfaces. The exact brushing technique differs depending on the type of electric toothbrush. Our video (see above on this page) shows how you can clean appropriately with the different brush types. Also important: the pressure of the brush must not be too strong. I can damage gums and teeth. If you often find yourself pressing your teeth and gums too hard while brushing, you can consider purchasing an electric brush with pressure control. These brushes are equipped, for example, with a small lamp that flashes when you press too hard.
Toothpaste with fluoride: Use a fluoride toothpaste. The Stiftung Warentest regularly examinest toothpaste. Good ones don’t have to be expensive, as our toothpaste tests show. The database provides reviews of 96 kinds of toothpaste for adults: universal and sensitive toothpaste, as well as those with a white label. They promise caries protection, natural white, or the protection of sensitive tooth necks. Test results for children’s and junior toothpaste can be found in our children’s toothpaste test.
Clean interdental spaces daily: In addition to brushing your teeth, clean the interdental spaces with dental floss or interdental brushes once a day. It is important to remove plaque effectively and prevent tooth decay. Because as good as you brush, toothbrushes do not get between the teeth. The video below shows how to do it correctly.
Brush your teeth even with bleeding gums: If you have problems with gum infections, you should not be prevented from cleaning – even if it starts bleeding. It is vital to remove the deposits on the gum line thoroughly. Otherwise, the inflammation may worsen. If you clean correctly, the bleeding should disappear after a week at the latest. Otherwise, it would be best if you asked your dentist for advice.
When children brush their teeth – control is better: Parents should always brush the teeth of small children who use an electric toothbrush – until they are fluent in writing (see also our video in the children’s toothpaste test ). Only then will fine motor skills suffice for independent cleaning. But the same applies to adults: control is better.
What are the advantages of an electric toothbrush?
Time savings: With the same cleaning time, the most electric toothbrushes representative clean your teeth better. With long brushing, similarly, good results can be achieved with manual toothbrushes.
Handling is much more comfortable: You no longer have to do the cleaning movement yourself. The toothbrush only needs to be guided along the surface of your teeth. It is not only easier but also more convenient.
Electric brushes are also suitable for children: However, the age recommendation printed on the package should be observed.
Effective clean: Studies show that the so-called plaque, i.e., the bacterial plaque, should be cleaned a little better by the high-tech brushes. It reduces the occurrence of inflammation of the gums.
